Testimonials

At MMH, our patients speak volumes.

Athlete, teacher, coach and cancer survivor

If you’re from southeastern Indiana, there’s a good chance you’ve heard of Donna Hoeing. From being an Indiana Basketball Hall of Famer to a longtime teacher and coach, she’s made an impact on numerous lives.

Despite her many roles, one title Donna rarely mentions is being a cancer survivor.

Dedicated to receiving her annual mammogram, Donna was first diagnosed with breast cancer at the age of 47. At the time, Donna, whose husband, John, passed away in 2000, was a busy single mother of two young sons.

“At first I was scared,” said Donna, remembering the moment she received the news. “My boys were 16 and 14. I didn’t want them to lose both parents.”

Donna had a lumpectomy to remove the cancerous tumor and went on to receive radiation therapy at MMH’s cancer center.

“I had a great experience,” she said. “Batesville School Corporation allowed me to run over and receive treatments on my lunch break. I liked being cared for by people who knew me. Everyone was kind and genuine — beyond what one would expect.”

After completing her radiation treatments and showing no further signs of cancer, Donna quickly returned to her busy life. However, five years later, another mammogram revealed more concerning news. The cancer had returned. Again, she returned to MMH, this time receiving a mastectomy followed by chemotherapy.

Cancer-free for 10 years now, Donna is happy, healthy and enjoying retirement.

“I like to stay busy — yard work, traveling, home projects,” she said.

“I’ve had challenges in my life, but I think each challenge prepares you for the next. I wanted to stay positive. I wanted to set an example. I wanted to succeed.”

And that she did.
