Rediscovering life without pain

Todd Meeks, 58, loved the thrill of motocross racing in his younger years but not the damage it caused his middle-aged knees. The pain came early and intensified to the point that he had to plan activities around it.

“Everything from getting out of a chair to walking was difficult,” he said. “It was bone on bone in both knees.”

Todd and his wife had moved to Brookville from Cincinnati in 2020, when they’d become empty nesters. His primary care physician referred him to Orthopedic Surgeon J.D. Stephens,
and Todd didn’t hesitate.

After decades of pain and frustrating medical visits, Todd found a “supportive, knowledgeable” partner in care. Together they considered options, and once Todd felt he had all the information he needed to make the decision, he had total joint replacements on both knees this past November and December.

Todd’s experience at other hospitals hadn’t inspired as much confidence and trust: “It’s a different vibe at a small-town hospital,” he said. “I love the welcoming atmosphere of Margaret Mary Health and have great trust in my doctors. When they ask if I have questions, they genuinely want me to ask questions. It feels like a family environment.”

After years of dreading every step, Todd was amazed to walk into his house unassisted when he came home from his first surgery. Todd progressed well through rehab and is excited to
be back to all the activities he’d been missing.

“I’ve finally been able to get the trees cleaned out around our creek and am back to mowing, trimming and all the outdoor activities I enjoy,” he said. “Every experience I’ve had with Margaret Mary has been helpful and friendly — night and day from every other medical experience I’ve had. I felt like I was getting the best care every time.”
