Kids washing hands

The return to school means classrooms are full and children are spending more time together. While that’s exciting, it’s also the time of year when illnesses spread more easily. Fortunately, a few simple habits can help keep your family healthy throughout the school year.

Wash hands the right way

Handwashing is one of the most effective ways to prevent the spread of germs. Children should wash their hands before eating food, after using the restroom, after coughing or sneezing, after playing outside and when they get home from school. Use soap and clean running water, scrubbing for at least 20 seconds. Make sure to wash the backs of the hands, between the fingers and under the fingernails before rinsing and drying thoroughly.

Cover coughs and sneezes

Remind children to cough or sneeze into a tissue or their elbow, not their hands. Throw away used tissues immediately and wash hands afterward.

Keep items clean

Backpacks, lunchboxes, water bottles and electronic devices can collect germs throughout the day. Regularly cleaning these items helps reduce exposure.

Get plenty of sleep

Sleep plays an important role in supporting the immune system. Children who get enough rest are better equipped to fight off infections and stay focused in school.

Fuel up with healthy foods

A balanced diet supports overall health and helps the immune system function at its best. Children should eat plenty of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean proteins and dairy.

Know when to stay home

Sending a sick child to school can spread illness to classmates and teachers. Keep your child home if they have a fever, vomiting or diarrhea, uncontrolled coughing or a contagious illness.
