When Should Men Get Checked for Prostate Cancer?
September is Prostate Cancer Awareness Month, making it a good time for men to learn more about their risk and when they should consider screening.
Prostate cancer is one of the most common cancers among men. One of the challenges is that it often causes no symptoms in its early stages. That’s why talking with your healthcare provider about screening can be an important part of staying on top of your health.
When should men consider screening?
For many men, the conversation about prostate cancer screening begins around age 50. Men with certain risk factors may need to start that conversation earlier. Risk increases with age and may also be higher for men who have a family history of it. Your healthcare provider can help you understand your risk and determine when screening is right for you.
What is a PSA test?
One of the most common ways to screen for prostate cancer is a prostate-specific antigen, or PSA, test. This simple blood test measures the level of PSA in your blood. A higher-than-normal PSA doesn’t necessarily mean cancer is present. If your PSA is elevated, your provider can help determine whether additional testing or monitoring is needed.
Are there symptoms to watch for?
Early prostate cancer may not cause noticeable symptoms. When symptoms do occur, they may include difficulty urinating, a weak or interrupted urine stream, blood in the urine or semen, or persistent pain in the back, hips or pelvis. These symptoms can also be caused by conditions other than cancer, but they should still be discussed with your healthcare provider.
Start with a conversation
If you’re approaching age 50 and haven’t talked with your healthcare provider about prostate cancer screening, consider bringing it up at your next visit. If you have a family history or other risk factors, that conversation may need to happen sooner.
