A healthier Halloween

Halloween is a magical time for kids — costumes, decorations and of course, candy! The good news is it’s absolutely possible to enjoy the fun of Halloween while keeping health and nutrition in mind.

  • Rethink the treats: Halloween doesn’t have to mean a candy overload. Consider other kid-approved alternatives like granola bars, dried fruit, trail mix, popcorn, stickers and glow sticks.
  • Smart candy strategies: Kids are going to eat candy — and that’s okay, but to help them enjoy it responsibly, set limits. Encourage them to designate candy time instead of letting them snack on it all day.
  • Don’t skip meals: Before heading out to trick-or-treat, serve a filling, nutritious meal. A full belly means kids are less likely to binge on candy right away.
  • Don’t forget the teeth: Make sure kids brush well after enjoying their treats — especially before bed.
  • Focus on the fun: Halloween isn’t just about the sweets. Costume contests, spooky crafts, haunted houses and pumpkin decorating are all ways to celebrate without sugar being the star of the show.

From all of us at MMH, we wish you a safe, happy and healthy Halloween!
