Regardless of age or background, everyone experiences stress to some degree. That’s why your true power isn’t to avoid life’s pressures, but instead to develop strategies to help manage them. Read our eight tips to help you stay calm even in challenging times.

  1. Get plenty of sleep: Aim for 7-9 hours of quality sleep each night. Adequate sleep helps the body and mind recharge so you can face what lies ahead.
  2. Move your body: Walk, jog or lift weights. It doesn’t matter what you do, as long as you move your body. Exercise releases endorphins, which are natural stress relievers.
  3. Eat right: A balanced diet provides the nutrients you need to support brain function and help regulate your mood.
  4. Plan your day: Control the day before it controls you! If you have a lot to do, prioritize your agenda for the day, but be realistic about what you can actually accomplish.
  5. Socialize more: Sharing your feelings with others can lead to a sense of relief and allow you to gain new perspectives on your situation.
  6. Share the load: If you need help, ask for it. Seeking help and sharing work can make tasks more manageable and enjoyable.
  7. Do what you love: Try to spend at least 30 minutes a day doing an activity you enjoy. Read a book, work in your garden or experiment with a new recipe in the kitchen.
  8. Schedule quiet time: Whether you choose to meditate, journal or practice deep breathing exercises, try to disconnect for at least 10 minutes a day.

While these tips can help you manage your stress, they may not work for everyone. If you’re experiencing persistent feelings of anxiety or depression, don’t wait. Schedule an appointment with your primary care provider.
