Many women report the first sign of breast cancer was a new lump they discovered on their own. For this reason, doctors recommend being familiar with the look and feel of your breasts. Please be aware most changes women find in their breasts aren’t cancerous though, and you should always follow up with a healthcare professional for accurate diagnosis.
Here are some key symptoms and warning signs to look out for:
- Breast lump: One of the most common signs of breast cancer is the presence of a lump or thickening in the breast tissue. It may feel different from the surrounding tissue and can be painless or tender.
- Changes in breast size or shape: If you notice any changes in the size or shape of your breasts, it could be a warning sign of breast cancer. This includes swelling, shrinkage or asymmetry between the breasts.
- Nipple changes: Pay attention to any changes in your nipples, such as inversion, redness, scaling or discharge.
- Skin changes: Breast cancer can cause changes in the skin of the breast, such as dimpling, puckering or thickening.
- Breast pain: While breast pain is not always a symptom of breast cancer, persistent or unexplained pain in the breast or armpit should be evaluated by a healthcare professional.
- Swollen lymph nodes: If you notice enlarged lymph nodes under your arm or around your collarbone, it could be a sign that breast cancer has spread.
