November is Lung Cancer Awareness Month — an ideal time to learn how you can take simple steps to support your lung health.

Quit tobacco

The biggest threat to lung health remains tobacco use. At MMH, we offer a tobacco cessation program to help you kick the habit for good. Developed by the American Lung Association, Freedom From Smoking® is ranked one of the most effective cessation programs in the country. To learn more or to register, call 812.933.3776.

Know your risks

Besides tobacco use, radon gas, a colorless, odorless radioactive gas found in many homes, is the second leading cause of lung cancer in the United States. Exposure to air pollution, secondhand smoke and workplace hazards can also damage your lungs over time.

Stay active

Exercise is one of the best ways to keep your lungs healthy. Activities such as walking, swimming or cycling help your lungs deliver oxygen more efficiently. Even simple deep breathing exercises can strengthen your respiratory muscles.

Get screened

If you’re between 50 and 77 and smoke or used to smoke, you may qualify for a quick, low-dose CT scan that can catch lung cancer early, when it’s most treatable. At MMH, we offer this non-invasive screening, covered by Medicare and most insurance plans. Talk to your doctor or call 812-933-3769 to see if you’re eligible.

Talk to your provider

If you have a persistent cough, chest pain or shortness of breath, don’t ignore it. Talk to your primary care provider. If you seek help when you first notice symptoms, treatment is more likely to be effective.
