Community leaders, donors, and Indiana Governor Mike Braun join dedication ceremony marking new era of care in southeastern Indiana

Margaret Mary Health (MMH) hosted a dedication ceremony and grand opening Thursday to celebrate the completion of its new hospital. The event brought together community leaders, donors, project partners, elected officials, and supporters to mark the culmination of a years-long effort to reimagine healthcare access in southeastern Indiana.

The $125 million facility represents one of the most significant investments in the region’s history and comes at a time when many rural hospitals nationwide face mounting financial pressure. Rather than scaling back, Margaret Mary Health is expanding by building a modern facility designed to serve area families for generations to come.

Governor Mike Braun, who joined the ceremony, praised the project as an example of what rural communities can accomplish when local leadership, donors, and residents work toward a shared goal.

“Margaret Mary Health’s new hospital is a tremendous example of what can happen when communities invest in their own future. Through Indiana’s READI initiative, we partnered with local leaders to support projects that strengthen regional economies and improve quality of life,” said Governor Braun. “This investment will help ensure families across southeastern Indiana have access to exceptional healthcare close to home while creating opportunities that will benefit this region for generations.”

The new hospital, built by construction teams Danis, Bruns-Gutzwiller and GBBN, replaces a building that has served the Batesville community for more than 90 years, since 1932. That history was front and center throughout the day’s celebration, echoing the health system’s tagline, “Generations of Care”, a phrase inspired by the many community members who have told MMH staff some version of the same story: “My mom was born here, I was born here, and I had my kids here, too.”

“Today, we celebrate more than a new hospital; we celebrate what this facility makes possible,” said Liz Leising, President & CEO of Margaret Mary Health. “Healthcare is changing every day, and this new hospital prepares us not only to meet today’s needs, but to embrace the future with confidence. It allows us to provide exceptional care in an environment designed around our patients, and it positions Margaret Mary Health to attract and retain the very best healthcare professionals, because people want to work in organizations that invest in excellence.”

In light of shifting dynamics across the healthcare industry, the decision to invest in a new facility, rather than scale back services, reflects a deliberate commitment to the region. The Margaret Mary Health Foundation played a central role in making the project possible, raising $10.7 million from community donors to support construction.

The new hospital allows Margaret Mary Health to continue offering a broad spectrum of services close to home, with spaces designed to help physicians, nurses, therapists, and other caregivers work together more effectively, and to support continued growth and innovation as healthcare needs evolve.
