Did you know falls are one of the leading causes of injuries, especially among older adults? Follow these tips to help you prevent falls and stay safe at home.

  • Keep pathways clear: Cluttered pathways can increase the risk of tripping and falling. Make sure to keep your floors free from obstacles such as loose rugs, cords or furniture. Consider rearranging your furniture to create clear and wide walking paths throughout your home.
  • Adequate lighting: Proper lighting is essential for preventing falls. Ensure all areas of your home are well-lit, especially staircases, hallways and entrances. Install nightlights in bedrooms and bathrooms to help you navigate during the night.
  • Secure rugs and carpets: Loose or wrinkled rugs and carpets can be hazardous. Use non-slip mats or double-sided tape to secure them to the floor. Alternatively, consider removing rugs altogether, especially in high-traffic areas.
  • Install grab bars and handrails: Installing grab bars and handrails in key areas, such as bathrooms and staircases, can provide additional support and stability. Make sure they are securely mounted and at the appropriate height for your needs.
  • Wear proper footwear: Wearing shoes or slippers with non-slip soles can reduce the risk of falls. Avoid walking around in socks or shoes with worn-out treads, as they can be slippery on smooth surfaces.
  • Use assistive devices: If you have difficulty with balance or mobility, consider using assistive devices such as canes, walkers or grabbers. These tools can provide added stability and support, reducing the risk of falls.
  • Stay physically active: Regular exercise can improve strength, balance and coordination, making you less prone to falls.

When it comes to preventing falls at home, prevention is key and taking proactive measures to ensure your safety is always worth it.
