The thyroid is a small, butterfly-shaped gland located in the front of your neck. Its role is to produce hormones that regulate your body’s metabolism, which is the process of converting food into energy. These hormones help control how your body uses energy, regulates body temperature and affects other vital functions such as heart rate, digestion and muscle control.

Below are 10 symptoms you need to have your thyroid checked:

  1. Fatigue: Feeling tired and lacking energy even after getting enough sleep
  2. Weight changes: Unexplained weight gain or weight loss
  3. Mood swings: Feeling anxious, irritable or depressed
  4. Hair and skin changes: Dry skin, brittle nails and thinning hair
  5. Muscle and joint pain: Aching muscles and joints without any obvious cause
  6. Irregular menstrual cycles: Changes in the frequency or intensity of your periods
  7. Changes in heart rate: Rapid or irregular heartbeat
  8. Digestive issues: Constipation or diarrhea
  9. Sensitivity to cold or heat: Feeling excessively cold or hot when others are comfortable
  10. Swelling in the neck: A visible lump or swelling in the front of your neck, known as a goiter
