Feeling down during the summer? It might be summer SAD. Most people associate Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) with the winter months; however some individuals experience symptoms in summer.

During summer months, longer daylight hours can throw off your internal clock while its high temperatures can cause agitation. Summer also brings changes in daily routines, which can leave you feeling stressed. The symptoms of summer SAD include insomnia, loss of appetite, weight loss, agitation and anxiety.

To combat summer SAD, try the following:

  • Stay cool: High temperatures and humidity can worsen symptoms, so staying in air-conditioned environments or using fans can help.
  • Maintain a routine: Keeping a regular schedule can provide stability and help manage symptoms.
  • Prioritize sleep: Ensuring adequate sleep can help regulate your mood and energy levels.
  • Stay hydrated: Drinking plenty of water is crucial, especially in hot weather, to maintain energy levels and overall well-being.
  • Limit sun exposure: While sunlight can be beneficial, too much exposure can worsen symptoms for some people.
  • Exercise: Regular physical activity can improve mood and reduce anxiety.
  • Choose wisely: Don’t let obligations drag you down. You are in charge of your schedule. You don’t have to attend every party or cookout. If extravagant vacations cause you stress, consider a relaxing staycation.

While it’s normal to have a day here and there when you feel down, it’s important to see your healthcare provider if you feel this way for days at a time and you can’t get motivated to do activities you normally enjoy.
